If you loved Spencer and Jackie, you’ll be glad to hear that director Pablo Larraìn has rounded out his trilogy of off-kilter biopics of brilliant, tortured women with Maria. The new film – which bowed at Venice Film Festival and received a lengthy standing ovation (obviously) – places Angelina Jolie in the role of legendary opera singer Maria Callas. 

In traditional Pablo style, it follows Maria’s final days with a kind of swirling discombobulation – bordering on surreal – and is shot by Ed Lachman, who brings the same kind of honeyed, grainy beauty that made Carol so sumptuous. Angelina looks the part. It’s all very compelling. Netflix has bought it, so you should be able to see it before the end of the year.
