Not that anyone really needs more, but if you want any further proof of what a colourful, chaotic year 2022 was, look no further than fashion. Indeed, for fashion fans, this will forever be known as the year of the trend — or perhaps even the year where the very notion of a trend became obsolete. Why, you ask? Well, because there were so many of them! Zaddycore, ‘Auntiecore’, ‘Butchcore’ — with a new one popping up every week — in large part fuelled by the fashion press’s vain hunger for hopping on the hot new thing (guilty!) — we saw fashion’s notoriously quick in-or-out cycle hyper-accelerate to a blur that even we had a tough time keeping track of.

Still, beyond the buzz of the microtrends, there were some — if you’ll excuse the pun — core trends that we saw carry on strong. The y2k revival saw no signs of dying out, and — as meticulously traced by our resident expert Tom George — the appetite for slutty menswear continued to boom, becoming more and more daring as the year progressed. Aaanyway, we don’t want to give it all away! Scroll and click through to the pieces below to unpack a truly wild year of fashion trends.
