A follow-up to Danny Boyle‘s breakthrough 1996 film Trainspotting is definitely on its way, and all of the original cast members are on board. Sony imprint Tri-Star have bought the international rights to the as-yet unnamed film — it will not be titled after Irvine Welsh’s literary follow-up, Porno — and have confirmed that Danny Boyle will again direct Ewan McGregor as Renton, Jonny Lee Miller as Sick Boy, Ewen Bremner as Spud and Robert Carlyle as Begbie.

Filming is set to start in late spring 2016, for a 2017 release. Mirroring the real-time lapse between the first film and now, the sequel will revisit the Trainspotting characters 20 years later through an original script by John Hodge, who adapted the Irvine Welsh book for the first film.

At the premiere of his latest film, a Steve Jobs biopic, Danny Boyle spoke about early plans for the Trainspotting sequel, telling the BBC, “Obviously it’s worrying because people will kill us if we made a bad job of it. I will get absolutely crucified… But you have to thrive on that potential danger within it and if it feeds into it, you might get a decent film out of it, you know”.
