Get the dogs out: Chloé have teamed up with Teva

Just in time for summer (it’s finally, finally here), the iconic French house has joined forces with everyone’s favourite sandals brand.

Let’s just admit it, summer is hell. Feet wise, at least, it’s hell. Otherwise it’s heaven. But when the temperature rises and we finally have to unleash the dogs on the world, other than a stellar pedicure there’s not much that can be done to make seasonal footwear chic. This is why people make fun of socks and sandals. This is why women still pair their sundresses with incongruous white trainers, Lily Allen style. But all is not lost: Teva, the original sports sandal purveyor, has teamed up with Chloé for a collaboration that fuses functionality and fashion. Descend on your BBQs post haste!

Specifically, the two brands are joining forces to release two new styles of shoes. But this is not just a typical collaboration – which is too often a meeting of similar minds, one that doesn’t produce aesthetic excitement the way it should – but a reaching across the aisle in the fashion world. This is gorpcore going luxury. This is a shoe blending sportswear with fashion. This is meant to take you from your BBQs to the club and back again, sprinting across pavement, sartorially impressive whilst liberated (by velcro) from the tyranny of those heeled mules you bought optimistically at the beginning of May, which will hobble around in, looking deeply undignified, at garden parties and weddings for the next three months.

The Chloé x Teva capsule collection was conceived with this idea in mind (okay, maybe not quite as specific as this). But both of the brands were born out of the belief that fashion and design should facilitate freedom of movement, exploration, not just looking good. Chloé’s founder, Gaby Aghion, established the house with this pioneering spirit at the helm of her vision, creating luxury ready-to-wear pieces that offered femininity, fluidity, ease, the antithesis of the stiffly formal fashions of the 1950s. Thirty years later Teva exploded onto the other side of the world; on the banks of the Colorado River, to be specific, when a resourceful river guide traversing the Grand Canyon attached velcro watch bands to his flip-flops to stop them floating downstream. Back then, it might not have seemed like this ingenuity would lead them to one of French fashion’s most well-loved houses, but history rewards innovation, after all!

And now that innovation has resulted in a melding of brand philosophy from Chloé and Teva, and a range of sandals that are both lightweight and dynamic in design and style. Somehow the collaboration has managed to reimagine and merge two of Teva’s most iconic silhouettes – the Hurricane XLT2 and Hurricane XLT2 Ampsole – with classic and playful recycled straps emblazoned with the Chloé logo. But despite this reimagining, available in black and white and multicolour pink, much of Teva’s well-loved lower-impact features have remained, including their 50% recycled rubber outsole that provides durability and traction.

It makes sense that these philosophies, of durability and recycled materials, of respecting the earth you’re traversing, have been championed so much in the collaboration. Both Chloé and Teva are renowned for their respective steadfast social and environmental sustainability strategies, after all, whether that’s Chloé’s transition towards a purpose-driven model, which includes publishing its sustainability report as an open resource and releasing its ‘vertical project’, a range of products with a unique digital ID so users can trace their journey from field to finished product. Teva meanwhile, transitioned three years ago ot sourcing 100% of its webbing from recycled plastic, and has since diverted 72.8 million

plastic bottles and 68,000 pounds of post-industrial waste from landfills. The company’s Corporate Responsibility Program, meanwhile, encourages the brand to look at the broader impact of its activities on employees, customers, communities, and the environment as a whole. As a part of this program, Teva has set science-based targets for water, energy and greenhouse gas reduction and is on track to hit these goals by 2030.

What all of that means for you, for me, for us, is that you can unleash the dogs this summer, still look good doing it, and support the environment while you’re at it. Well, you can from 16th May, when the Chloé × Teva collection will be available in Chloé boutiques, on Chloe.com. It’s a win win win. Happy summertime.
