    christmas with paul hameline

To celebrate the advent of the festive season, we asked i-D's family and friends to share their most cherished Christmas memories, reflect on whether they’ve been naughty or nice, and tell us their New Year’s resolutions for 2017.

Paul Hameline is one of those models who has transcended beyond being a mere clotheshorse. Exquisitely beautiful and effortlessly cool, he’s the star of Paris’ new fashion underground, a regular feature on the Instagram accounts of photographers like Collier Schorr and Willy Vanderperre, and stylists like Lotta Volkova. Since being scouted on his way to an exam, after stopping on rue Saint Antoine to withdraw some cash from an ATM, he’s gone on to grace the catwalks of Maison Margiela, Vetements, and Prada, and of course the pages of i-D. So whether he’s been naughty or nice this year, we love him all the same.

Happy Christmas, Paul! Tell us what’s going on in your photo ?
It was in 2000, in the Swiss Alps. I couldn’t ski just yet, so I used to get on my father’s back with my dog and just stare at other the other skiers while waiting for us to stop in a high altitude restaurant so I could get an Ovomaltine.

Have you been naughty or nice this year?
    You tell me.

    What’s on your Christmas list?
Original prints of Saturn taken by NASA in 79 and a record player.

How will you be spending Christmas day?
In the French countryside, in front of the chimney, eating salmon eggs, drinking nice wine, reading a good book, all that while listening to nice music.

What’s your favourite Christmas song of all time ?
I would say either Hurt by Nine Inch Nails or Le Petit Chevalier by Nico.

Who do you want to kiss under the mistletoe?
We wouldn’t want to jinx it, would we?

What’re the best/worst Christmas present you ever received ?
Hmm. Let me think. The best one is most definitely my dog, Karl. He’s my best friend.

Concerning the worst one, I was around 12 and wanted one of those aluminium Decathlon scooters, a really basic one, the same as my friends. Well, my father had the good idea to get me a brown crocodile one with red wheels. I took it once to school and never used it again. I couldn’t even ”park” it where my friends would park theirs, the lady of the entrance had to keep it safe… I hated it.

    What were your 2016 highlights?
Being introduced to a witch with whom we listened to Goblin and Clara Rockmore at dawn overlooking tulips we planted together.

How will you usher in the new year?
Either facing the Moroccan desert or a Scottish Loch at dusk, still uncertain though.

What are your New Year’s resolutions?
To reread Greek tragedies and mythology, which I used to be obsessed with when I was younger. And bring my bike to London.
