Most of these mixes are founded in some kind of reality. Okay, sometimes it’s a reality clouded by smoke machines and whisky sours, but reality nonetheless. In a slight departure, Clubfeet have chosen to soundtrack a fantasy. This in a mix for an imagined situation, in 1974, when your Land Rover is half buried in Namibian sand dunes and your guide Cyril has just announced you’re at least 13 hour drive from the next town. We’ll let the band fill in the rest of the scene for you…
“I took the last sip from our thermos of gin and quinine as the final flute notes of King Crimson’s “I Talk to the Wind” wafted out over the desert. We were a week out from Cape Town and we were all wondering if we’d made a terrible mistake. Suddenly black clouds started gathering above us, and the wheels of the Land Rover found some purchase in the now-damp sand. Monty uncorked a 1963 Chateaux LaFite Burgundy, a vintage he liked to call “a traveler”, and Seb dropped a new cassette mix he’d made into the deck. “It’s Raining” sang Hugh Masekela through the speakers, and we smiled with our red stained teeth as we sped towards the mountains towards the cloud forests, out of the desert and into Africa.”
