    i-D’s alternative fashion week awards: autumn/winter 17

Approx. 12,000 shows later and fashion month has drawn to a close. To help us make sense of it all we’ve divided the season up into our very own, highly original categories and dished out the gongs for our fave fashun fings of autumn/winter 17. And the…

The Charles Jeffrey Award for Most Impractical Outfit to Wear Down the Pub After Work: Comme Des Garcons
Has Rei Kawakubo been getting her inspo for Scotland’s loveliest Loverboy? Following on from Charles’ display of oversized papier mache monsters during LFWM, Rei proposed her own take on the outfit you definitely could not wear not wear to the pub, with her post-fashion, post-silhouette, post-trend, post-everything take on the monstrous, magical and mystical potential of fashion itself. Doesn’t even have arms to hold your pint glass with. If you do wear to the pub, pair with low key Nike trainers.

The Reduce Reuse Recycle Award for Dipping Into the Archives: Balenciaga
Demna dipped his toe into the Balenciaga archives this season, and decided that the water was lovely, and jumped straight in. For autumn/winter 17 the Georgian designer referenced the work of Cristobal himself, for a collection that updated the master’s looks for a modern, urban, sophisticated age. Whetting our appetite for the upcoming V&A retrospective.

The Comeback of the Season Award: Alek Wek
Baby we’ve missed you! Welcome back! After a few quiet seasons, the Sudanese star was suddenly everywhere, striding elegantly across the catwalks of the aforementioned Balenciaga, as well as sashaying her way down the runways of Marc Jacobs, Kenzo, Ann Demeulemeester, and taking part in Dries’ star-studded greatest hits collection too.

The CFDA Award for Services to American Fashion: Raf Simons
In just two shows, one for his eponymous brand, the other, his debut at Calvin Klein, Raf Simons took the NYC fashion world by storm, single handedly sending a big load of critical love towards the city that never sleeps. Belgian’s do it best.

The Blue Is the Warmest Colour Award For Best Use of the Colour Blue: Dior
No lesbian romances at MGC’s second Dior show. But her collection reinforced her statement of intent to inject the historic house with a big old baby blue dose of youthful streetwise energy. A headliner writer’s dream.

The Blade Runner Award For Dystopian Make-Up: Matty Bovan
Matty Bovan has seen things you wouldn’t believe. Dresses on fire off the shoulder of Orion. He’s watched sequins glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. But all those fashions will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to sew.

The Bootylicious Award for Most Extravagant Boots: Saint Laurent
Sparklier and sexier than almost any other boot we’ve ever seen, and definitely the stand out piece from Anthony’s second Saint Laurent offering. Those boots were made for walking, and Rihanna wore them right off the runway and straight into our hearts.

The Stephen Jones Hat Trick Award for Most Novel Millinery: Rick Owens
Fave Scouse Milliner Stephen Jones would be proud of Rick Owens’ novel approach to being a mad hatter this season. Stretched clothes across wireframes worn on heads. Superbly, singularly, wonderful, totally 100% Rick Owens.

The Irn Bru Award for Best Use of Tartan: Junya Watanabe
So good the Scots hate to see it leave. Junya got all punk ain’t dead this season with his hymn to the Land of Whisky’s finest fabric, in a tribute to Viv, Malc and Johnny Rotten.

Best Spontaneous Dance Performance to a George Michael song: Stella McCartney
Stella got all Freedom! 90 this season with an all-singing all-dancing all-joyful celebration of the life of Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, as her models jived away to Faith for her show’s finale.

The Bobby Abley Award for Cartoon Collaboration: Ryan Lo x Hello Kitty
Ryan Lo and Hello Kitty is a match made in Kawaii heaven. In a tribute to the now sadly closed street style stars of Japan’s FRUiTS magazine, the cutest of cute designers got even cuter, journeyed deep into all the Tokyo fashion star cliches, and came up smelling of pretty pink roses.

The Breakout Star Award: Halima Aden
Halima Aden, Miss Minnesota, Hijabi superstar, brand new Yeezy muse, and queen of autumn/winter 17.

The More Is More Award for More More More: All 120 Gucci Looks
Alessandro Michele is onto a good thing right now, his Gucci garden is in full flower and overflowing with produce. Combining his men’s and women’s shows, Alessandro had a big task on his hands. He built a giant glass pyramid to house his Milan catwalk, and sent 120 looks of total and utter beguiling maximalist beauty down it.

The Lil Kim Award for Best Boob on the Frow: Nicki Minaj at Haider Ackermann
Nicki Minaj stole the show on the PFW Frow by turning up to Haider Ackermann’s show wearing half a top, a shiny nipple pasty, and some very sci-fi sunglasses. She was apparently inspired by a Picasso painting and not Lil Kim, who famously turned up at MTV VMAs wearing half a top and a shiny nipple pasty in 1999.

Best Cameo Appearance from an i-D Staff Member: Frankie Dunn at Marques’Almeida
Yes Frankie! Our beloved editor of all things Icelandic took the Marques’Almeida catwalk for the third season in a row, in a dashing grey suit, magical yellow slippers and clutching a gorge pink handbag. What a babe.

The Didn’t I See You on the Cover of i-D Award for Best Cast: Dries Van Noten
For Dries’ 100th show he staged a fantastic piece of fashion history, uniting the best of the best of the best for a stunning tribute to the fab faces who’ve made their way down his catwalk over the years. Malgosia Bela, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Kirsten Owen, Amber Valletta, Trish Goff, Karmen Pedaru, Catherine McNeil and literally so many more than we’ve barely scratched the surfaced. A history lesson. But the kind you actually enjoy.

Your Feet Must Hurt Quite a Lot Now Given All that Walking You Did Award: Adwoa Aboah
    She’s here. She’s there. She’s every-bloody-where. Love ya.
