irvine welsh hints at a tv show future for ‘trainspotting’ characters

After waiting 20 years for a sequel, why stop there?

As if you weren’t excited enough to revisit the exploits of Renton and pals in T2, Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh is taking things up a notch. Speaking in NME, he admitted he had plans to adapt the cult film into a television series. “It’s all ruling on cable TV, cable TV has some interesting developments,” he teased.

Irvine explained that as a writer, whenever he finishes a project he immediately begins wondering how he could tell it again with a different medium. It’s an understandable impulse, given adaptations like Westworld and Game of Thrones currently command the globe’s attention. “I think now anybody who’s in the book, whether the like it or not, they’re working on the way of being in the film. You keep that in mind. As soon as you’ve written it, you’re thinking about how it can move into different mediums.”

He also praised the upcoming sequel, saying: “I’m very, very excited about it and I think people are going to be excited too. You’ll always get the critics who moan about it not being the original Trainspotting movie or being too much like it…but it’s going to be a great film, a great stand-alone film, but also work with the first film as well to bring that whole world together.” For more Irvine Welsh, check out our chat with the author earlier this year.
