Irvine Welsh made his name in the early 1990s withTrainspotting, a dark tragic-comedy that explored the lives of young heroin addicts living in Edinburgh in the late 80s. Now, two decades and a lot of acclaim later, he’s returning to the time period and exploring a considerably different subculture.
He and journalist Dean Cavanagh have co-written a new TV series called Ibiza87 that will follow the early careers of three British DJs living in Ibiza during the summer of 1988 and 1989. It’s a time they declare the “Second Summer of Love.” The characters will be based on British house legends Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold, and Danny Rampling, who were central in the UK’s acid house scene. In a statement, Oakenfold explained the show ties to the trio’s 30-year anniversary of that trip, which he sees as the “birth of the dance music club and festival scene as we know it today.”
The release date is yet to be announced.
