While 2016 has seen many of Australia’s long-serving models continue to hold court, it has also given rise to some very unique fresh faces. In terms of the experienced girls, Julia Nobis shot for Prada while walking in almost everything. Going by her Instagram account, Catherine McNeil had the time of her life while also walking in Chanel’s spring summer 17 show and featuring in prominent editorials. And Gemma Ward made comeback appearances on various runways and magazine covers.

Bringing a breath of fresh air to the industry, Lily Nova and Franny Cowap are couple of new models who’s careers truly took off in 2016 when they were invited to walk in Gucci’s decadent spring summer 17 runway. We spoke to them to learn more about their highlights so far and hopes for the future.

    Lily Nova

i-D: What was a personal highlight?
Lili: I really enjoy being around the people. I love being backstage or at the fittings, there’s always this moment where I realise how much creativity and genius is in one room and it’s just really amazing to be a part of that.

Who were you hanging out with during the shows?
The Aussie girls! I think we had a conversation about Vegemite. It was all very surreal, having such normal conversations about home in such an extravagant place.

    Funnest moment or party?
    The Gucci Afterparty was incredible

If you had any revelations or perhaps just came away with a thought, what was it?
Life is inconceivably short so do or be what makes you happy.

Your job takes you a long way from Adelaide in every sense, what do you like most about going away and coming home?
I never realised how far away we are from the rest of the world until I got to Europe. It’s very exciting, you never really know what’s going to happen on each trip or who you’ll meet – the possibilities are endless. Coming home is always incredibly special. My parents pick me up from the airport and as soon as I get in the car it’s like I never left. I’m also not sure if I’m more excited to see my dog or if she’s more excited to see me.

What do you think it’s important to fight for?
Equal rights for women and the LGBTQ+ community is something I’m very passionate about and I have attended rallies and marches for these causes in the past. Every generation needs a revolution and I think ours will be important in defining what will become of us or our world.

    Who inspires you?
I have some close friends who are so overwhelmingly happy with their life and it’s hard not to be inspired to do the same.

    Favourite Instagram account?
@textstop always deliver the funny goods.

    Do you have a hobby?
I’ve always loved reading and writing, at the moment I really love painting. It’s nice to just have a little world to escape to for a while.

What music are you loving right now?
I’m still not over Beyonce’s Lemonade.

What book are you reading right now?
The book I’m reading at the moment is called Dare Me, which is about a cheerleading squad and it’s surprisingly dark. I love it for the prose, it’s so beautiful and dark.

What are you most looking forward to in 2017?
Being happier, more confident and making the most of my last year as a teen.

    Franny Cowap

i-D: What was a personal highlight?
Franny: The moment when my booker called me to tell me that I confirmed the Gucci show! I couldn’t believe it!

Who were you hanging out with during the shows?
Other models – girls that I was staying with or that I’d met at castings. There were a couple of other Aussie girls at Gucci so that was fun!

    Funnest moment?
Finally getting to walk down the runway after all the preparation! I love that!

If you had any revelations or perhaps just came away with a thought, what was it?
To make sure to take five minutes in every day to stop and realise where you are and appreciate the moment! Sounds cheesy but I think it’s important not to let it all just fly by.

Your job takes you a long way from Sydney in every sense, what do you like most about going away and coming home?
I love getting to travel and meet so many incredible people and when you get some free time to explore the city and really get a sense of the culture. What I look forward to about going home is getting to see friends and family! And the Sydney beaches!

What do you think it’s important to fight for?
So many things! I’d love to see more equality and acceptance in the world as well as more action against climate change!

    Who inspires you?
Anyone who uses their voice/platform/following to promote an important message is inspiring to me.

    Favourite Instagram account?
@deliciouslyella – she creates amazing looking heathy plant based food and also posts photos of her adorable dog!

Who keeps you sane in busy times?
Definitely my mum! She’s the best!

    Do you have a hobby?
I love baking, music, Pilates, netball… So many things.

What music are you loving right now?
    Loving Flume’s new album.

What book are you reading right now?
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I’m such a massive Harry Potter fan.

What are you most looking forward to in 2017?
I have no idea what 2017 will bring but I’m excited to find out!
