There’s something exciting about autumn, when the leaves begin to change colours and there’s a noticeable chill in the air. Not only does it feel like new territory, a new season that ushers in a fresh start, but for us fashion fans it’s also the perfect time of year to freshen up our wardrobes by investing in those staple items we’ll wear all fall and winter long, or by breathing new life into well-loved garments we hold dear. Luckily for us, i-D stylist Milton Dixon is here to share some of his top tips for getting dressed as the seasons change – embracing transitional pieces and personal style, all the while getting creative with what’s already in your closet. What could be better than that?
“Within my work, personal style and personal life, I really have to be flexible and open to change,” Milton says, especially of this time of year. “I’m always seeking pieces to transition from set to dinner, a DJ gig, a flight, etc. My style is all about cool pieces that feel natural to me and allow me to go with the flow of my life.”
Milton’s chosen three fashion-forward looks fit for all the above, inspiring us to get creative with our wardrobes by going monochrome, trying out bright colours and mixing patterns for fall – all while staying grounded through the changing seasons and terrains, with Clarks Torhill collection. Embodying the brand’s legendary Wallabee, the chunky, 90s-inspired Torhill soles and colourways – from cow print to cobalt blue suede – are easily a streetwear must-have this fall and winter.
See how Milton’s incorporated the versatile styles into his head-to-toe fall fits, honouring both heritage and his unique sense of style, and read his fall fashion advice below.
1. Monochromatic dressing
What do you love most about dressing for fall?
New looks! Fall is all about refreshing the wardrobe for me.
Walk us through the fit — what are you wearing in your first look?
A Raf Simons vintage leather, Acne Studios sweater and T-shirt, Marni pants and my go-to Clarks Torhill Hi!
What’s been inspiring your personal style lately?
Comfort, Smino, 90s hip hop, elderly men on my block in Bedstuy.
What’s your top tip for mixing up your look when going monochromatic?Textures and proportions will really help keep it interesting!
2. Lean into bright colours
Tell us about your second look.
I’m wearing a Comme Des Garçons sweater and Marni shirt and orange socks with my cobalt blue Clarks.
What’s one of the biggest misconceptions about wearing vibrant colours?
Wearing vibrant colours can feel immature and connected to childlike dressing, but I think with the right styling it could be elevated, mature and still fun.
What makes the Clarks Torhill so versatile here, even in bright, playful colourways?
The suede cobalt blue makes it perfect for most occasions. It’s easily going with a bunch of looks!
3. Mixing patterns
And what’s your third and final look?
A great plaid coat, maroon plaid shirt, oversized grey plaid trousers and cow print Clarks.
What’s your number one piece of advice for folks looking to mix prints within their wardrobe?
Don’t let the prints intimidate you. Try it in and see what works for you.
What do you love most about Clarks? What makes the brand so timeless?
Clarks come in so many styles and colours, so they can really be an option for any occasion – casual for daytime or dress them up for night. That alone makes them timeless. A classic go-to with a twist!
