Read, watch, wear, listen, see… how to spend your week, according to i-D.

The new week is here and with it comes the chance to delve deep into some fresh culture and fashion. Here’s your latest look at the i-D Guide.

    Stay at… The Roxy

Located at the border of two of the Big Apple’s buzziest neighbourhoods, The Roxy sits smack bang at the heart of one the city’s foremost creative hubs, a couple minutes’ stroll from Walker Street, which houses some of New York’s best independent galleries. A venture across Canal Street will land you in SoHo, the city’s shopping mecca offering everything from Prada and Rick Owens flagships to Zara, Muji and more. Jaunts further afield are easily facilitated by the property’s proximity to Canal Street’s abundance of subway stops, whisking you more or less anywhere in the city you might need to head to.

    Roxy Penthouse details.jpg

A reincarnation of the iconic Tribeca Grand, The Roxy evokes the glitz of the legendary, like-titled 1920s movie theatre, with the spirit of the era’s glamour conjured the moment you step into its vaulted, Art Deco-style atrium. At its heart lies the Roxy Bar, a cosy setting replete with leather and velvet-lined booths and banquettes that hosts live jazz performances seven nights a week – all with no cover charge, a diamond-rare find in a city infamous for draining your wallet the moment you step out the door. There’s also The Django, a subterranean jazz club modelled on Paris’ années folles-era nightclubs, and for those keen for a quieter night, The Roxy Cinema, playing first-run independent films, rare archival prints and 35mm screenings of cult classics.

When you do eventually decide to turn in, you can take your pick from one of the 201 (soundproofed!) rooms that frame the dramatic central foyer. Featuring plush king-sized beds, blackout blinds and darkwood furnishings, each makes for the ideal cocoon for convalescing after a day spent in the midst of New York’s hustle and bustle – not to mention after a night spent downstairs. Book your stay here.

    Wear… Asics x Otto958 sneakers

Asics collaborations with London label KIko Kostadinov have earned cult appeal in the fashionsphere, regularly selling out the moment they drop. For the latest partnership between the two, though, Asics has partnered not with the buzzy brand’s mainline, but with its IYKYK affiliate label – OTTO958, a longstanding partnership between Kiko Kostadinov and LA-based gallery Moràn Morán, Launched in tandem with a film putting the shoe to the test shot at Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin’s estate in the American Midwest, the Gel-Flexkee 958 (£165) builds on the Japanese sports brand’s signature skateboarding shoe, featuring Otto958 cult ‘O’ emblem on the tongue. Having spent several years dressing fans of florals, stripes and great colour combinations, London brand Damson Madder are applying the same aesthetic to homeware. The collection consists of a series of collaborations with local creatives and small businesses: a hand-painted ceramic range designed in collaboration with Poppy Almond; gorgeous handmade cushions by Studio Sparks using Colours of Arley fabric; and candles developed with Earl of East. Try… iOS 17

Apple just launched the new iPhone 15 and 15 Pro last Friday, and it’s arguably one of the first new models in a while that fully justifies the upgrade. Amongst the new features: a seamless new charging system with a USB-C port, a sturdy titanium built body, a 48 megapixel main camera and a new Dynamic Island, saving you time when tracking every day things like countdown timers and the arrival of your Uber. It’s also, funnily enough, the best device to play around on the new features of iOS 17. Some of them just make everyday things a little more easy: like a built in ‘check in’ feature for when you tell your mates to text them when they get home safely, audio message transcription for when you cba finding your headphones, and, finally(!) a swipe to reply function on iMessage. Others are a little kookier: like the ability to personalise the screen your friend sees when you call them (cut to me choosing the ugliest photo of me ever as a jumpscare), a fun and streamlined new way to make stickers from your photographs, and a cute new way to swap numbers with your crush at the bar, with NameDrop. Update your device now to try it out, and head to Apple’s website to get your hands on the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro.

    Locals app

    Try… Locals

Designed to be said in the style of Lady Gaga by the piano, Locals is a new social networking app earning support from the founders of businesses like Calm, Revolut and Telegram. The idea is simple: an app where entrepreneurs can gather to make real-world plans, either one-on-one or as part of a wider event listed in the app. Feel like you’ve got a smart new plan that will revolutionise the fashion industry, or completely tear up the art space? Locals looks like a good place to go. After all, the app has cracked the 200,000 members mark, meaning it’s officially bigger than Raya. Check it out here.

    Listen to… METTE

Her first single “Petrified” knocked us out a couple of years ago, and we’ve been waiting ever since to see what might come next. Turns out her latest single “VAN GOGH” surpassed it, and the new EP METTENARRATIVE firmly establishes her position as one of 2024’s big break outs.

    Watch… Truman’s new music video

Having starred in films like Dunkirk and Legend, actor Charley Palmer Rothwell explores a new medium with his artist project, Truman. His second single “Charley Boy”, out now, is a raw portrayal of addiction, complicated family relationships and the wounded inner child. The release is accompanied by an anxiety-inducing visual, directed by James Alexandrou. Fans of The Streets and DIY punk shows should follow Truman on Instagram here and Spotify here.

Go to… Corbin Shaw’s The People Fled When The Sun Went Down

Sheffield-born Corbin Shaw’s practise often dissects the relationship between the media and their relationship with the working classes, but here he zooms out, and showcases works that twist tabloid headlines to show their hypocrisy in the wake of scandals like the exposure of Huw Edwards. The show runs until 7 October at Jealous Gallery. More information here.

    Go to… Serpentine Park Nights

Do you like raves? Do you like art?! Well, if you’ve found yourself here, the answer to both those questions is most likely a resounding yes, hence our suggestion that you clear your calendars for the next three Friday nights to head down to Hyde Park for Serpentine’s Park Nights. Since 2002, the London art institution has presented new performance commissions spanning art, music, film, fashion, philosophy, dance and so much more, with Serpentine’s annual pavilion serving as its stage. This year, the programme has been curated by Claude Adjil in response to Paris-based architect Lina Ghotmeh’s pavilion, with a particular focus on musical artist acclaimed on the global electronic music scene. On September 29th, Toronto-based DJ and producer Bambii will take to the decks for an evening of genre-irreverent dance music, while on October 6th, interdisciplinary artist Christelle Oyiri – also known as CRYSTALLMESS – will present a live iteration of her forthcoming record, accompanied by invited collaborators. What lies in store for the culminating edition on October 13th remains a surprise, though given that it overlaps with the dates of Frieze week in London, it’ll no doubt be a corker. Go to… Conor Clinch’s Sanctuary

Irish photographer Conor Clinch has leaned into conservationism with the unveiling of his new exhibition Sanctuary, which captures historical shells — many on camera for the first time — from the Natural History Museum. Known best for his fashion and commercial work, it’s an inspired spin on nature photography. Check out the exhibition at 101 Rue Du Temple, Paris from 28 September to 1 October. More information can be found on Conor’s Instagram here.

    Go to… Beat Hotel Ibiza

Whilst objectively speaking it might well be autumn (even if between the thunderstorm the temperature out there still feels positively tropical) but just because summer’s over doesn’t mean your summer holidays have to stop just yet. If like us you’re still chasing the tail end of vacation season, then you’re in luck. This weekend marks the closing ceremony, in Olympian debaucherous style, of Beats Hotel Ibiza. Beginning its life as a Glasto stage, this year Beat Hotel became brick and mortar, and it’s celebrating the switch up with five days of curated cultural programming to see out the summer with as much serotonin as possible. There’s everything from poolside DJ sets by Irvine Welsh to Michelin Starred tasting menus by Brad Carter (if that’s more your vibe than a big blow out). Of course there’s the more classic entertainment too, with night takeovers with the likes of Shanti Celeste and Sofia Kourtesis, across the White Isle. Wish it was June again. Check out the full line-up here.

    Go to… TalkART (live!)

Podcasts are no longer the reserve of the treadmill at the gym or the train home from work. Now they have veritable fanbases all of their own. One of the most dedicated is that of TalkART, the arts and culture based podcast from Russell Tovey and Robert Diament. This week tickets are released for a live recording of their pod in collaboration Ruinart. Recorded live at the Serpentine, the sessh will be the first in a series of events from the institution furthering their sustainable commitments and raising awareness of global environmental challenges. For this installment the hosts are joined by French Contemporary Artist Eva Jospin for a live episode recording in the Serpentine Pavilion where Eva discusses her career and inspirations behind Ruinart Carte Blanche Commission PROMENADE(S). Get your tickets here.

    Drink at… Wonders

Something about the chill in the air (shush, it’s coming) makes us want to switch our day festivals and beach Aperols for a little more refinement. Luckily the Wonder Room at Selfridges in London has gifted the city Wonders, a celebration of the wonder of, well… fizz. Opening from Saturday 16 September until Sunday 8 October, the grown-up playhouse showcases a collection of gems from renowned Champagne houses Dom Pérignon, Krug, Armand de Brignac, Ruinart and Veuve Clicquot. Think Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette — not the revolution part — as you step back in time; the rooms are inspired by the spirit of Renaissance ‘wonder rooms’ where people gathered in olde worlde times to see curated collections of crazy and category-defying objects. This time you have your phone to take pics of the wonders, and you can get sloshed doing it. J’ad.
