Happy Monday! The new week is here and with it comes the chance to delve deep into some fresh culture and fashion. Here’s your latest look at the i-D Guide.
Go to… The EDITION Hotel in Reykjavik
Opened earlier this year, the Icelandic jewel in the crown of a worldwide EDITION branches (including the recently opened Tampa, in sunnier climates) has officially unveiled its new nightclub, an underground cavern not too ironically named Sunset. The hotel joins a host of EDITIONS which are already hotspots across the UK and US, not just a London and New York, but with cultural hubs everywhere from Bodrum to Tokyo. This past weekend the Reykjavik branch played host to the launch of two new fragrances from Scandi luxury fragrance house, Andrea Maack. Each note of Pavillion and Magma, the latest releases from the Icelandic visual artist, draws inspiration from the stunning coastline of the Reykjanes Peninsula and the striking Geopark Villa, and in the spirit of its environmentally conscious country of origin, is carefully created using the best quality raw materials, and produced totally without plastic. It’s fitting then, that the release took place in one of the world’s most sustainable capital cities, in a hotel set in the historical and scenic heart of downtown Reykjavik, just across from the Harpa Concert Hall, but close enough to the volcanoes, geysers and elusive Northern Lights that draw tourists in from all over the world. Ah, it’s enough to get you excited for Eurovision (we’re sure Liverpool will be just as picturesque…right?).
The Nightmare Before Christmas: Live in Concert
One of the greatest Christmas musicals ever made gets the live concert treatment this weekend. Something of an annual tradition, Danny Elfman, the legendary artist behind many iconic film scores, revives his music from the Tim Burton-imagined classic The Nightmare Before Christmas with a live orchestra, bringing along a friend to play the part of Sally to his Jack Skellington. Last year, in LA, it was Billie Eilish. This year, at London’s OVO Arena, it’s our fave, Phoebe Bridgers. Head here to get last minute tickets for Friday and Saturday night.
Collectivist
London-based artist Isaac Andrews has been enlisted by Converse to curate a group exhibition. Collectivist gathers artists from across the country — from Trackie Mcleod to Shannon Bono — for one weekend at the Copeland Gallery. The next generation of British art legends will be there from 7-10 December. More information can be found on Isaac’s IG here.

Watch… Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
There have been three adaptations of Pinocchio this year: the gay one, the Disney live-action one, and then Guillermo del Toro’s 14-years-in-the-making stop motion version, which is far and away the best animated film of the year. del Toro’s fascination with dark fables means his version takes place in 1930s fascist Italy. A carpenter grieving the tragic death of his son wakes up to find he now has a new one made of wood. But as the village he lives in clocks on to the anomaly, he forces him to live the life any boy at that time would have to, strictly following authoritarian rule. Of course, the film bursts with energy and rebellion at every turn; a majestic and brilliant labour of love. It’s in cinemas now and on Netflix from 9 December.
Listen to… Isamaya Ffrench’s new project
Having formed black metal-leaning supergroup Alto Arc at the start of 2022 (read all about that and their Euphoria moment here), beauty guru Isamaya is at it again. Now collaborating with composer Sam Thomas, the duo weave deliciously dark folk stories with their forthcoming debut album, Mantle. For a taste of what’s to come, check out the video for its title track — like a cut scene from Robert Eggers’ The Witch but directed by Isamaya herself.
