    Watch… Corsage

Vicky Krieps delivers her best performance since Phantom Thread in this boundary-pushing tale. Set in the late 1800s, it follows Empress Elisabeth of Austria as she turns 40. Traditionally considered the age when women “lose” their beauty, Elisabeth rebels against her own public image. This is a wild, transgressive and compelling period drama. It hits cinemas on Boxing Day.

Go to… A Streetcar Named Desire

You’ll have to bend over backwards, do three front flips and sell your first born child for a ticket, but if anything’s worth doing that for, it’s Rebecca Frecknall’s take on Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. The director won an Olivier for her revival of Cabaret; now she’s invited Paul Mescal to play the part of Stanley Kowalski, a brutish man in New Orleans contending with the arrival of his wife’s sister Blanche DuBois, a fading southern belle on the brink of a breakdown. The original is a classic; this is bound to be special too. Tickets are, of course, sold out, but you have until 4 February to frantically check for returns. More information is here.
