On Thursday Dover Street Market threw open its doors to New York, filling every floor with the best New York has to offer in terms of art, fashion, and live salsa (obviously). DSM might be the high temple of contemporary fashion design, but that doesn’t mean it’s unfriendly — everyone packed into the Rose Bakery for champagne before going on an odyssey through the many floors. Brianna Capozzi was there with Chloe Sevigny signing her book, “Well Behaved Women”, for her legion of friends who all jammed in to congratulate her. She’d also brought her mom, who stars throughout the book, and is particularly glamorous.

Ascending the stairs, we came upon Charles Jeffrey painting the walls in his customary platform shoes, surrounded by his Loverboy label. Angelo Baque, ex Brand Director of Supreme who now helms his own label, Awake, found himself swamped by fans, so luckily he’d enlisted the John Benitez Salsa Band as distraction. It was complete insanity, as hypebeasts queued around the block for a chance to get their hands on Awake merch. On the top floor, Peter Schlesinger signed copies of his fabulous Gucci book, Disturbia, which was altogether more relaxed (the Gucci floor has the feeling of an aerial greenhouse).

In between running into everyone you’d ever met, there were moments to admire Comme des Garcons’ anime infused new women’s collection, or Undercover’s Cindy Sherman t-shirts, or Simone Rocha’s extravagantly ruffled dresses. DSM expertly combines streetwear and high fashion, homewares and head-wares, high concepts and decidedly sensible, low heels. Whether you’re price bracket be basics or Balenciaga, it’s there (or you can always just have a look — we can’t think of many stores it would be pleasurable to waste a few hours browsing). The sound of salsa wafted down Lexington as we walked away into the night.
