His impact on i-D has been immeasurable.

Inimitable, incomparable, ingenious and dryly camp — he invented a new visual language with his DIY aesthetic that he applied across multiple media. Jewellery, film, fashion, photography all felt his magical touch. Often working with the detritus of everyday life — blue plastic bags, shopping lists, paper clips, safety pins — Judy created a world of luxury within these simple punk items, turning them into significant totems. “If you don’t have it, make it,” he would say. There was no distinction between the gutter and the stars.

Consulting to fashion brands like Comme des Garçons, Gareth Pugh and Christopher Shannon, his wisdom and aesthetic defied time but his love of the safety pin never waned. Providing the style backbone to much of the late 80s and early 90s pop music, he styled Neneh Cherry, Björk, Boy George amongst others — creating images that feel as contemporary and groundbreaking today as they did 30 years ago. His relationship with i-D started in 1980, with the magazine’s launch — and his last visit to the office was just earlier this year.

Nothing was impossible to Judy. He was and will always be a true iconoclast, a legend. Or as he pronounced it, “leg-end.” We will miss him.

    Judy Blame. 1960 – 2018.
