Drew Barrymore is well versed in the art of inducing a scream or sixty, so her next project is hardly a surprising one. Not surprising, but definitely exciting — she may be producing a new horror series written and directed by women, titled Black Rose Anthology. Deadline reports that the show will explore “some of humanity’s deepest fears from a woman’s unique perspective,” tackling terror through “vignettes about guilt, jealousy, repression, paranoia, insanity, sexual obsession and survival”.

The project is only in preliminary stages, with Scream: The TV Series‘ showrunner Jill Blotevogel penning the pilot script. And with Drew’s production company Flower Films also on board, we’re pretty hopeful it’ll go full steam ahead. They are, after all, responsible for a vast number of cinematic masterpieces, including Donnie Darko, Never Been Kissed, Charlie’s Angels, and more recently, Drew’s cannibalistic Netflix hit Santa Clarita Diet.

The show would be a welcome addition to a new women-led wave of horror, which includes St Vincent’s XX anthology, and French filmmaker Julia Ducournau’s award winning, stomach churning Raw. Thank goodness we’re getting few more women behind the horror lens to challenge and change the stereotypical tropes of Blonde Girl Number 2 whose untimely demise comes at the hand of dodgy sunbed, or Psycho Ex Lover who spits blood and is probably Megan Fox’s long lost twin.
