Ever since it was announced that the next season of American Crime Storywould follow the murder of Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan, the fashion world has speculated over who would play Donatella. After all, the reining Versace matriarch is undoubtedly one of a kind; it’s hard to imagine another woman trying to mimic and capture her unique style and charisma. But after months of rumors — largely focused on the possibility of Donatella’s friend and fan-girl Lady Gaga stepping in — the casting decision has been made. In something of a surprise turn, Penelope Cruz has been named in the part.
It will be the Spanish Oscar-winner’s first ongoing TV role. Production on American Crime Story: Versace will begin next month but won’t air until the second series in the franchise, American Crime Story: Katrina, finishes airing sometime next year. Our hopes are high for this one, although the producers have big shoes to fill following the masterfully cheesy 2013 Lifetime movie House of Versace.
