Chrissy Teigen has called on the fashion industry to put more asian models on the runway, while speaking to E! News at the launch of the Sport Illustrated diversity issue. When asked about the importance of the magazine’s theme, the model commented, “I was just talking about how important [diversity] is, for me personally as an asian woman, and maybe someone who a lot of people don’t think is asian.” Chrissy’s mother is Thai, while her father is German and Norwegian.
“I think it’s really important to start embracing people without seeing them in roles like ‘That Asian Girl’ or ‘That Asian Boy,'” she said. “I want it to be a normal thing to be able to see Asian models, and I think Asian models are really underrepresented in the industry, of course. Especially on the runways and in magazines.” The numbers are behind her. As Fashion Spot report, during the spring/summer 2017 shows across New York, London, Paris and Milan, only 7% of all models were Asian.
This isn’t the first time Chrissy has called out issues of representation: her dry Twitter response to the Miss Teen USA 2016 finalists (all white, all blonde) exploded, where she quipped “Wow how can we choose from such a diverse bunch.”
