Happy 2023 icons! Here’s to another year of iconic runways and fashion campaigns and chaotic microtrends for us to ferociously try to keep up with! The new year is already shaping up to have a lot of exciting changes in the fashion sphere with changes at fashion houses left, right and centre! But we’re here to keep you posted on it all don’t you worry. In the meantime, here’s what you’ve missed: from the limited edition Lunar New Year capsules celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, to Kate Moss’ new look for Marc Jacobs, Dior and ERL in London, and a new collection from Chloé and Barbour. Here’s what’s in fashion.
Gucci hops into the Year of the Rabbit
Though those of us who abide by the Gregorian calendar may have rung in a new year just a couple days ago – and my goodness, what a year it’s already been – followers of the Chinese Lunar calendar will be toasting their annual reset later this month, with the arrival of the Year of the Rabbit. So yes, if you already feel that this year has been a bit of a bummer, then fear not – a fresh start is on its way! Here on planet fash, though, the arrival of the Lunar Year means one thing – a beautiful bounty of scarlet-dashed capsules and campaigns! Leading the charge, as you’d expect, are Gucci, who have dropped an adorable flower-filled image series spotlighting sneakers and tees decked out with graffiti bunnies, as well as special renditions of the House’s signature handbags from Gucci Diana totes with hand-painted stripes to Gucci Horsebit 1955 shoulder bags featuring precious leathers, tweeds, and studs. Naturally, there are also snow-white, fuzzy-wuzzy bunnies galore. All the more reason to hop along to your nearest Gucci store! MS
… and so does Ferragamo!
For anyone chomping at the bit for a slice of Maximilian Davis’ Ferragamo before his widely-lauded SS23 collection hits the stores, here’s your chance! To fete the arrival of the Year of the Rabbit, the British-Trinidadian designer has created a capsule that melds his design codes of svelte, exacting elegance with traditional Chinese sartorial motifs. Spanning blossom-print silk foulards, shirts and skirts, a crewneck sweater, and a city jacket, as well as scarlet riffs on low-top sneakers, the Gancini buckle belt, and the signature Trifolio and Studio bags, it’s the sort of capsule that we can guarantee would augur good fortune to any wearer. You know what to do, girls! MS
Marc Jacobs give Kate Moss an iconic new look
A new year means a new you. Time to archive all your old Instagram posts, choose a new TikTok “core” that will become your entire personality, purchase a whole new wardrobe from Vinted, and dye your hair a new and shocking tone that you will regret by the end of the month. Leading the way in 2023 reinvention is iconic supermodel Kate Moss who fronts the new Marc Jacobs resort campaign wearing the brand’s stunningly towering Kiki heels, as seen on the runway, and the classic full-grain leather bucket bag, both of which are currently available in Marc Jacobs stores and online. The most exciting aspect of the photographs taken by Harley Weir, though, is the electric pink mop Kate’s sporting. Is Kate in her e-girl era? Is she about to go see Blackpink on tour? Anyway, we’re into it! TG
The Burberry logo has grown bunny ears for the Year of the Rabbit
In the Year of the Rabbit, it is perhaps our moment to be more adventurous and Burberry’s latest campaign for the Year of the Rabbit invites us all to, quite fittingly, take a bunny hop into the unknown. A new short film with three unique perspectives shows actors Qi Xi and Shi Pengyuan and footballer Zhao Lina each exploring new realms full of new possibilities and opportunities and each wearing items from a special collection of Burberry bits all adorned with rabbit motifs. Think: the iconic Lola bag now embroidered with bunnies as well as the classic Thomas Burberry monogram; varsity jackets and shorts in auspicious scarlet, and featuring the Burberry B with flopping bunny ears on its head like a 2016 Ariana Grande stan; and airy maxi dresses featuring hare couples whose ears meet to form a heart. Isn’t that adorable? There’s plenty more items in the collection featuring rabbit motifs too and check them all out on the Burberry website and in boutiques now. TG
Dior and ERL bring Cali cool to London
Back in TKTK in Venice Beach, Kim Jones and hometown hero Eli Russel Linnetz showcased a Spring 2023 Dior Men collection so ethereally mesmerising that we were left wondering if it were all a dream. Well, last night, we were glad to learn that it damn well wasn’t! That’s because the collection has finally landed at Dover Street Market in London, accompanied by a poppy installation on the fashion emporium’s ground floor. Echoing the ease and energetic irreverence of the collection itself, the space has been lit up in neon blue lights, with a bright pink oh-so-Cali convertible at the heart of it all. West Coast really does give the most! Head down to DSM before January 19th to check out the totally rad installation IRL. MS
Chloe x Barbour’s collection has your look for springtime walks sorted
If you’re feeling contemplative right now, like a reflective walk through the woods soundtracked to Taylor Swift’s Folklore really fits your current aesthetic,we suggest doing it in the new collaborative collection from Chloe and Barbour. From sleek boots with a tartan print detailing and bucket hats, to waxed-cotton trench coats with frilled sleeves and stunningly sleek Edith bags to carry your book to read mysteriously on a bench by the riverside in. The standout of the collection, though, is a swooping, draping cape in navy with the tartan print lining a dramatic hood as if you’re a traitor going to meet at a Scottish castle on the DL to secretly kill off a faithful. We could see the ever-chic Claudia Winkleman wearing it which, of course, means we’re into it! Check out the full collection online now. TG
Lady Dior Art elevates the handbag to an exhibition-worthy object
If ever you’re looking to make the case that, yes, fashion is indeed art, look no further than Dior’s Lady Dior Art series, the longstanding project that sees the Lady Dior – the iconic handbag named after Princess Di herself – reimagined in the hands of some of the world’s most exciting women artists. For the seventh iteration of the project, eleven artists hailing from countries as far-ranging as Qatar, the USA, Egypt and China – including Ghada Amer, Alex Gardner, Bouthayna Al Muftah and Wang Yuyang – have been invited to reinterpret the bag’s storied codes, and make use of the house’s savoir-faire to create a series of exclusive objets d’art. Chic, non? Well, click the video above to learn more about the process behind Bouthanyna Al Muftah’s exquisite contribution to the latest round of the project. MS
Meet Bun Bun, the new face of Acne Studios
Winning the award for the cutest face of the Chinese New Year campaigns goes to Bun Bun, the rabbit designed by French-Russian sculptor Apollinaria Broche, known for creating some wearable, some non-wearable pieces inspired by those little glass figurines everyone’s aunts have in a cabinet in their lounge for some reason. You know the ones. The adorable rabbit with eyes just like the twink emoji (🥺) was first seen in the artist’s collaboration with Acne Studios for the Fall 2021 collection. Now, the character comes back to celebrate the new year, hanging out with actor Vicky Chen in Beijing and chilling in a Musubi bag as Vicky sports Acne Studios’ SS23 collection as well as a special ready-to-wear line designed for Chinese New Year to celebrate and manifest peace and prosperity for 2023 – now available to shop in-store and online.
