Skepta hasn’t taken any time off following the release of his Mercury Prize-winning album, Konnichiwa. After the record dropped in March, the rapper got straight into more philanthropy through the The Levi’s Music Project. The eight-week initiative allowed 12 kids from the area Skepta grew up to receive ‘creative guidance’ from the man himself, before performing their music at the V&A.
During an interview with the Standard to promote the project, Skepta revealed a few other ventures he’s working on. The first: a feature film about the global rise of grime. “It’s going to be about Boy Better Know but not in [a completely] autobiographical way,” the rapper explained. The label he founded with brother JME made international headlines earlier this year after Drake boasted he’d been signed (and got a BBK tattoo).
Skepta is also consulting on a revival of the prematurely-cancelled British crime drama Top Boy. The project is beingfunded by Drake, a fan of the show who couldn’t go without his favorite series. Rumor has it that season three might be set in the States.
As for the Mercury Prize money? Skepta’s vowed to put that £25k right back into other charitable initiatives, similar to The Levi’s Music Project.
