The Buenos Aires-born, London-based (via Madrid and Burnley) designer Aitor Throup has been announced as the new Executive Creative Director of G-Star Raw. Throup has been a creative consultant for the innovation denim brand for the past three years, working on developing new approaches to the brand’s signature 3D denim styles, as well as on the concept for the London flagship store, and art directing the recent ‘What is RAW?’ global campaign. Throup presented his first collection for G-Star during Paris Men’s Fashion Week in June this year, titled RAW Research after the innovation lab he leads for the brand in Amsterdam, which is also where he will relocate for this new role.

A statement accompanying the announcement explains that there is a “natural connection” between Aitor and G-Star, in that they share a “design ethos that is rooted in innovation and identified by 3D construction.” “It was this shared philosophy that initially drew me to the brand,” Aitor confirms, adding that “When I first met with G-Star, I was struck by the product-focused DNA and conceptual approach to design.”

The news of Aitor’s appointment at G-Star comes in a stellar year for the sometimes elusive designer. In 2016, he celebrated the 10th anniversary of his eponymous design studio, A.T. Studio, launching the online archive New Object Research, presented his first collection in over three years during London Collections: Men, and was named an honorary fellow of the RCA.
