Boy Better Know member and Lord of the Mics founder Jammer was one of the early producers, along with Wiley, Terror Danjah, Danny Weed and Target, to pioneer the unique sound of grime. From the Lord of the Decks interview series to a decade of legendary Lord of the Mics battles, Jammer has continually shaped the scene, supporting the icons as well as newcomers, starting in London and now across the whole of the UK.
Ahead of his (very exciting) vinyl dubplate set on the rooftop at the Ace Hotel on Sunday, Jammer gave i-D his selection of the best and most rare cuts that have made their way onto the internet (apart from one, which is so rare it can’t be found online). Check them out, along with Jammer’s own notes, below.
1. Durtty Doogz – Pulse X (Jammer remix)
“Anywhere you’re hearing this know it’s been ripped from my dubplate. It makes me happy every time I hear it.”
2. Dizzee Rascal – Go
“One of my favourite Dizzee tunes, it sounds as fresh now as it did back in early 2003 when it first got released.”
3. Skepta – Dead Pussy
“I don’t think this came out but it’s an essential dub in my collection. There’s also a vocal version featuring Big H, Bossman and Skepta.”
4. Wiley – Morgue
“You can’t go wrong with this dub. It might seem normal now, but no one had heard sounds like this back in the day.”
5. Macabre Unit – Sense
“This was doing the rounds in 2003/2004 and is one of the best instrumentals for a grime set to this day.”
6. DJ Deekline – I Don’t Smoke The Reefa (White Label remix)
“This is so hard and exclusive, you can’t even find it online. I don’t even know who made the remix I own and i’m sorry but it’s staying in the chart cause it’s HARD.”
7. Jammer – Take You Out instrumental
“A throwback to those good old N.A.S.T.Y Crew days, Skepta also remixed the instrumental of this.”
8. Jammer – Army
“Essential classic Jammer beat, it’s a heavyweight classic that’s stood the test of grime time. It came out on Locked On back in 2002 with Jiggy & Larver on the flip side.”
9. Mr Wong & Jammer – Chink Rasta
A big collaboration. We had another track called Kung-Fu on the b-side. Someone paid £30 for a white label of this recently. Decent investment piece.
10. Skepta – DTI
“Original Pirate Station sounds from Skep. This eventually came out on Dice Recordings in 2003 with Hyper on the b-side. If this white label is in your bag, you’re moving correct.”
