Since we were introduced to her in 2005 — with “Pon de Replay,” never forget — Rihanna has shown us she’s a master at pretty much everything she touches. She sings, she dances, she designs, she torments Drake — she’s got it all. But outside of her 2012 turn in Battleship and scene stealing cameo in This Is The End, she hasn’t shown a huge interest in acting.
That was until it was announced that she’s landed her first major TV role: and she’s not starting off easy. RiRi will appear in Bates Motel, the TV prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, as Marion Crane. In the 1960 film, the part was originated by Janet Leigh. Film history spoiler: she’s the one who meets an infamous end in that shower scene.
In a statement executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin explained their casting choice saying: “We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way. We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.” The Anti singer revealed her love of the show in a Vanity Fair profile last year.
The news was announced at Comic-Con over the weekend; Carlton later posted a lo-fi video of Rihanna confirming it on Twitter.
