After hopping on the phone with BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac to premiere the first single from what will apparently be her last album, M.I.A. has now released the video for “Go Off.” M.I.A. hinted to Mac that the video would be a stripped-back affair, evidently not thrilled at the prospect of working with more humans after dealing with 1,000 extras and 125 crew members on her self-directed “Borders.” The highly political artist was true to her word, dropping a visual consisting solely of bombs exploding against barren desert backdrops and turbulent beats produced by Skrillex and Blaqstarr.
The new album, A.I.M., will apparently be M.I.A.’s cleanest and least controversial yet. “I just want it to be happy,” she said. “There’s no complaints on it. There’s another side to me completely; I don’t know if people know that.” Find out what she means when the album drops on September 9.
