This year Barbie has been kicking all kinds of goals when it comes to her resume, but now she’s taken it up a notch with her latest assignment — she’s made it to the White House. That’s right, President Barbie is here. Not only that, but she’s brought a female VP with her.
The two newest members of the Mattel family are the result of a partnership between the toy brand and She Should Run, a non-partisan women’s leadership group helping women run for office in the US. To promote the release, this morning every woman in US Congress received a package containing the dynamic duo. Naturally, most of them tweeted about it.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a POTUS Barbie; Mattel has been making candidate and President dolls since 1992. But this is the first time we’ve seen Mattel introduce an all-female presidential ticket. Move over, Ken.

The endeavor was motivated by a recent Girl Scouts Research Institute study, which found that 68 percent of American girls don’t feel inspired to pursue careers as politicians. Mattel hopes that President and VP Barbie will inspire young women all over the world to aim for leadership positions.
“Representation, even with toys, can go a long way to changing how people think,” Erin Loos Cutaro, founder of She Should Run, said yesterday. “It’s not that women can’t win. It’s that they aren’t running in the first place.”
America is just four months away from election day, and as the race to the White House intensifies, the newest member of the Barbie family couldn’t have arrived at a more fitting time. Also, no prizes for guessing who Mattel is backing come November 8.
