In 2012 Rihanna launched The Clara Lionel Foundation in honor of her grandparents. The nonprofit, “works to improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, education, arts, and culture.” Now the superstar and her organization are extending their work to a scholarship program that will allow students in Barbados, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, Jamaica, and the United States to attend university.
The scholarships aren’t only generous—they range from $5,000 to $50,000—they’re also realistic about the experiences and challenges surrounding higher education. Many similar bursaries cut off if a degree isn’t earned in four years, but the CFL funding is renewed until a bachelor’s degree is earned. Applications are open until June 10 and students are assessed on, “academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience and a personal essay.”
The superstar has an impressive history of philanthropy through the foundation. After losing her grandmother to pancreatic cancer, Rihanna became dedicated to improving the treatment of cancer patients in the Caribbean. In 2012, the organization’s funding helped establish the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Barbados.
