Charli XCX has taken to the streets of London with balloons, a little pink eye shadow and maximum feminist steeze to help launch the return of the Powerpuff Girls. After a 10-year hiatus, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup are back to save the world from evildoers like Mojo Jojo and the crab clawed villain, who goes by the name HIM. We’ve got a hunch HIM could be the show’s answer to the IRL villain known as the dude-bro, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.
In an interview with NME, the 23-year old singer lists the reasons why the return of the Powerpuff Girls is so important for girls all over the world. “What’s great about the Powerpuff Girls is that it is so forward thinking, it is really a representation of what girls are like today, you know, bad asses basically.” Continuing, she says, “At the age of 15, there really is definitely kind of like a dip of self-confidence in young girls. You know, some of them think that they’re worth a lot less than boys, which is obviously not true and very sad.”
Charli XCX grew up watching the show and explained why she thought the world’s most powerful (also ridiculously stylish) girl gang deserves the spotlight: “the coolest thing about them is that there are definitely characteristics that every girl can kind of identify in either one of the characters.”
On top of helping girls all over the world realise that they’re made up of so much more than sugar, spice and all things nice, the Powerpuff Girls have been exercising their superpowers and smashing gender stereotypes. In an episode of their new Cartoon Network series called Horn, Sweet Horn, the girls empower a transgender pony that wears a fake horn to love his true self, “I may not have a horn but I do have a heart and in that heart I know I’m a beautiful unicorn!”
