“Is Los Angeles the world’s next fashion capital?” It’s a question we asked one year ago after a slew of high-profile designers — including Raf Simons, Tom Ford, and Nicolas Ghesquière — announced plans to move west. Simons changed his mind about the sunny California city a few months after deciding to move Dior’s cruise show there last January, and left Dior for good only a few months after that. Hedi Slimane caused intense pearl-clutching when he moved Saint Laurent from fancy Paris to free-spirited L.A. in 2012. And in the four years following, helped elevate not only the fashion cred of the city’s streets but of its indie music scene. Slimane, too, has now exited the house he relocated for. But Los Angeles continues to occupy a special place on the fashion landscape. Made is now hosting a new mini fashion festival that looks to further cement the city’s reputation as a breeding ground for sartorial innovation.
Made L.A. will take place on June 10 and 11 this summer, and boasts a pretty sick lineup of local talent. Jeremy Scott will be holding down the headline spot with a mixed-gender resort show for Moschino on June 10. The following day’s big draw card will be Tyler, The Creator, who will present pieces from his Golf Wang line — yes, the one with the Adolf Trump T-shirts. WME | IMG, the company behind the new initiative, will also be throwing concerts, parties, and a retail element called “The Stores” into the mix. This last element will exist as a market of sorts, featuring work from more than 30 designers and artisans.
As Scott said about the City of Angels last year, “I do feel like you do your best work wherever you’re happiest, and I’m happiest here.” As it seems like another designer departs a brand every week due to psychological strain, that’s probably the best endorsement there is.
