Instagram users went into premature meltdown mode this week with posts attacking the social media platform’s imminent non-chronological timeline. Now it seems people are back to using the platform for a far more awesome purpose: NSFW selfies that stick double middle fingers to slut-shamers and the platform’s own notoriously retrogressive attitude to women’s bodies.
This afternoon Emily Ratajkowski and Kim Kardashian kept the female-empowerment wrecking ball hurtling through the atmosphere with a doubly powerful selfie that showed their detractors exactly what they think about the imminent sexist backlash. “We are more than just our bodies, but that doesn’t mean we should be shamed for them or our sexuality,” Emily wrote. Kim kept it classic: “When we’re both like…we have nothing to wear LOL”
Earlier this month Kim wrote an essay prompted by the sexist responses to the original, now-iconic selfie that first set the internet ablaze three weeks ago. “I am empowered by my body,” she wrote. “I am empowered by my sexuality. I am empowered by feeling comfortable in my skin. I am empowered by showing the world my flaws and not being afraid of what anyone is going to say about me. And I hope that through this platform I have been given, I can encourage the same empowerment for girls and women all over the world.” Ratajkowski Instagrammed her own NSFW photo in a show of solidarity, while Demi Lovato, Christina Milian, Rowan Blanchard, and Amber Rose all voiced their support of the OG seflie queen. If this latest update is any clue, the patriarchy had better move out the way — because it looks like the movement isn’t slowing any time soon.
