ANOHNI (formerly Antony Hegarty) has shared the video for her new single “Drone Bomb Me,” featuring many-time i-D cover star Naomi Campbell. Directed by Nabil (Frank Ocean, Kanye West) and art-directed by Givency’s Riccardo Tisci, the video shows the tear-strewn model mouthing lyrics to the track. And while on paper it may sound like a particularly intense episode of Lip Sync Battle it’s actually very moving. “It’s a love song from the perspective of a girl in Afghanistan, say a nine-year-old girl whose family’s been killed by a drone bomb,” Anohni told Radio One’s Annie Mac last night. “She is kind of looking up at the sky, and she’s gotten herself to a place where she just wants to be killed by a drone bomb too.”
Anohni has rarely shied away from the political, of course — her last single “4 Degrees” being an incendiary message against climate change — and we’re very glad that we have her to talk about these things on the radio. The song features on Anohni’s forthcoming album Hopelessness, which is due on May 6, and you can watch the video below.
