Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Hozier has released the video for his new single, “Cherry Wine.” The atmospheric and moody short film charts the course of a couple (Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan and Vikings actor Moe Dunford star) going through heartwrenching cycles of reconciliation and abuse. The latter is only depicted in the bruises on Ronan’s body and face, which she tries to hide with makeup and by letting her hair fall over her face.
Dearbhla Walsh is the Irish director of the video; all proceeds from the single will benefit international domestic-abuse charities.
“Domestic violence is an ongoing issue in our society, the statistics of which are shocking and the effects of which damage whole families, communities and span generations,” Hozier said in a statement. “With the song ‘Cherry Wine,’ I tried to get across the difficulty of coming to terms with and facing up to domestic violence and the dynamic of an abusive relationship.”
