Filmmakers Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees have solid ears. The pair’s documentary Amy — the critically acclaimed retrospective of late singer Amy Winehouse’s singular talent — is looking likely to take this year’s Oscar for Best Documentary. Recently, the duo confirmed a forthcoming project about another British musical force: Oasis. But there’s one iconic artist the filmmakers would “drop everything” to chronicle: David Bowie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gay-Rees explained that he and Kapadia are looking to move their documentary projects away from the traditional film format their past efforts have taken. “We want to do more documentary series, more for the platforms in the States, the Netflixes and the Amazons…they’re the people we’re talking to a bit more now,” the producer said. For example, a six hour project could be split into hour-long episodes, or 90 minute segments as a mini-series. Gay-Rees added the Kapadia-piloted piece will be “based around a seminal year.” He’s not telling which one, but it might as well be 1972 — when Ziggy Stardust first came to life during a pub gig in southwest London.

“We would kill to make that film. We would do anything to make that film,” Gay-Rees said of a Bowie doc, he and Kapadia’s dream project. “Trying to do that in 90 minutes would be tricky,” he said, apparently gunning to strengthen that Netflix bid. “There’s so much great material to work with.”
