The pop star youth of today could take a leaf out of Iggy Pop’s book when it comes to releasing new music. No 18-month wait from the former leader of the Stooges: since announcing his until-then secret and unexpected next album Post Pop Depression last Friday, Mr Pop has dropped lead single Gardenia and, as of this afternoon, new single Break Into Your Heart.
Whereas Gardenia was a gently rambling, guitar twanging ode to “A forbidden dream… much taller and stronger than me,” the latest track is a metallic, thrumming rock and roll tale of breaking into someone’s heart, with the somewhat creepy promise to “crawl under your skin”. The genius artwork shows Iggy hand in hand with the record’s producer, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age fame.
“A lot of geezers my age don’t work out of their comfort zone anymore because once you become legendary you don’t want people challenging you,” Iggy Pop says of his experimental recent work. We can’t wait for the full album to drop on 18 March.
