The release and incredible success of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton earlier this year has solidified the hip-hop group’s status as music legends. And their achievements are now being recognized formally by the establishment, with the announcement that they are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.
The iconic music awards recognize the “contributions of those who have had a significant impact on the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and roll,” with a 25-year consideration period from the release of an act’s first record to its eligibility. N.W.A. have been put forward four times since they became eligible in 2012.
“When we started N.W.A., I couldn’t have imagined this,” Dr. Dre told Rolling Stone. “I never thought the type of music we were making would receive such a high accolade,” he said, adding, “I have always done what I love to do, so to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is unreal. I am humbled to be included in such an amazing group of great artists.” Also speaking to Rolling Stone, Ice Cube said, “It means that the group’s mark is kind of solidified. It’s all legitimized in a way because the whole music industry has to honor the group.”
Asked whether N.W.A. will perform at the induction ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on 8 April, 2016, Ice Cube told the magazine, “I want to. I think we can get Ren, Yella and Dre together. I think Snoop might do an honorary Eazy. I can’t speak for him, but we’ll ask him. We’ll probably ask a few people.”
