In 1975, a teenage Morrissey was the head of the British branch of the The New York Dolls’ fan club (and would frequently send scathing letters to music publications that ignored his favorite glam rockers). Before LCD Soundsystem drummer Pat Mahoney formed a fan club for his newest project, Museum of Love, he was a member of The Misfits’ famous Fiend Club. Now, goofball slack rock’s leading man, Mac DeMarco, is resurrecting the good ol’ fashioned fan club for the digital age — with a little help from his mom.
Yesterday, the Canadian crooner announced a new leg of tour dates in support of his short but sweet recent release Another One, a revamped website, and the official launch of the Mac DeMarco Fan Club. Operated by DeMarco’s own mother, Agnes (who will serve as club secretary, the legend) and his manager, the club is a community formed around all things Mac.
Membership is divided into two tiers: Fans and Disciples. Fan membership is free and includes digital fan club newsletters, new videos, up-to-date reports about DeMarco’s goings on, meet and greet opportunities and exclusive contests. Disciples, however, pay a $50 annual fee to receive an official fan club ring (!!!), personalized birthday message from Agnes, a printed zine, and a “holiday surprise from Mac.” Remember when DeMarco gave out his Far Rockaways home address and invited fans over for coffee? That holiday surprise could be literally anything. A $21,000 pair of crusty Vans, an American Apparel unitard, or (probably) some smokes.
