Happy Tuesday! The new week is here and with it comes the chance to delve deep into some fresh culture and fashion. Here’s your latest look at the i-D Guide.
Snag… everything Cherry World
If you’re far from California and craving the culture of it, look no further than the new cannabis lifestyle brand Cherry World. Everything from weed to apparel to skateboards are made under their moniker. And some pretty great people are involved too, including Glen Luchford, stylist Fran Burns and the brand’s ex-pro snowboarder CEO, Josh Levine. Head to their website and Instagram to keep tabs on what’s to come.
Wear… WARDROBE.NYC X HAILEY BIEBER
Model and American icon Hailey Bieber links up with New York’s coolest concept store for a brand new line of fashion essentials. Made with Italian textiles, you can ensure they’re all you need to complete your wardrobe… hence the brand name. It’s so easy, in fact, you can buy the whole thing in one lot. Check the collection out here.
The latest Uniqlo U drop…
Masters of staple dressing Uniqlo have, once again, linked up with the genius Christophe Lemaire to create a new Uniqlo U collection for AW22. Expect knitwear, outerwear, slacks and accessories in classy, muted tones. A few of the items, jackets in particular, are not split by gender; a progressive move encouraging us all to switch up our style. Grab it on Uniqlo.com and in store from 22 September.
and GANT x Wrangler, shot by Nadia Lee Cohen
Photographer, model, muse… Nadia Lee Cohen does it all. Her multifaceted talents reach max potential in the latest campaign she shot and starred in for GANT and Wrangler’s new link-up. Check it out in full here.
In honour of the collection’s launch, Nadia answers our burning questions.
What do GANT and Wrangler represent to you? And how did you seek to translate that here in the campaign?
They’re both classics, but Gant is classic in a preppy way and Wrangler is classic in a staple, traditional way. My dad wears Wrangler jeans! The merging makes total sense though; the collection has just enough equal parts from both brands to create the hybrid of high society meets traditional Western wear. We amped up the hair, makeup, and even the Dolly Parton-esque square french tip nails and set this against a desolate dry painted desert backdrop.
Where does the line between commercial photography and fine art photography lie for you? Or perhaps better put, is there a line between the two?
The main difference between commercial photography and anything personal is just creative control. A brand can give as much leeway as possible which is always great but you still have to highlight and hero the product in order to make it look the best it possibly can. Which isn’t something I would be doing when working alone, instead I tend to view the image as a whole and focus on every detail.
What drew you to the campy Western/frontier Americana aesthetic we see in the campaign?
The tagline is ‘Not my first rodeo’. This sounded like a film title and gave the idea to approach the films and still images in an artificial sense so they felt like Hollywood screen tests.
Tell us a bit about the characters we see in the images – what are their backstories?
They’re just trying to make it in Hollywood.
Outside of these images, what are you wearing from the collection, and where?
I’m wearing the cream shirt with the little horse pattern, the dark denim waistcoat and jeans with the tan belt. I’m wearing them to walk around the muddy countryside and drink tea.
… and issue two of Circus
A proud platform for chaos, colour and mayhem, Circus has quickly become one of the most audacious and exciting new magazines in London right now. After their debut issue, headed up by E-I-C Jackson Bowley, sold out, they’ve now arrived with another edition. The new issue, launching 23 September, features contributions from the likes of FKA Twigs collaborator Aidan Zamiri. But it’s no ordinary magazine: each contribution pulls out to form an A1 poster you can slap up on your wall. If that’s not the future of publishing, we don’t fucking know what is. Head here to reserve your copy.
Watch… Don’t Worry Darling
Okay, okay, we get it! You’ve heard so much about this film and it’s not even dropped yet. Well finally, it’s here: after years of waiting, Don’t Worry Darling will arrive in theatres globally this Friday 23 September. Sure, the reviews haven’t been glowing, but by God if you’re in the mood for a bit of fun at the movie theatre (because, as Harry told you, it’s a movie), this is just the ticket. Florence Pugh, of course, absolutely nails it.
Read… The Story of Art Without Men
Tracey Emin said this book by Katie Hessell will “change the history of art”. It’s simple, and says it all in the title: if we were to ignore the existence of the male artists who, despite their seismic talent, take up too much of the every day art conversation, what women would be having their moment instead? Katie’s book uncovers incredible female artists from throughout history and across continents, finally giving many of them — long under-appreciated — the love they’re due. Buy your copy here.
… and Naked Nutrition: An LGBTQ+ Guide to Diet and Lifestyle
There are so many things to factor into our exercise and eating habits that we can forget it’s not a ‘one size fits all’ regime. Naked Nutrition is a book that sets out to, as it says, break down the ways in which our sexual preferences, hormone treatments and HIV status interact with our diets and lifestyles. Buy your copy here.
Go to… Hallyu! The Korean Wave
At the V&A in London, a new exhibition celebrates the boom in South Korean culture making its way across the globe, from its earth-shifting artists to the cinema of Bong Joon-ho. Title Hallyu! The Korean Wave, it’s a thorough and impressive showcase of everything from art to on-stage costumes. If you’re a fan of K-pop, South Korean cinema, or just about anything to do with the impressive Asian nation, you know where to be. Hallyu! The Korean Wave opens on 24 September. Buy tickets here.
and Parallel Stories From Here
The Polish photographer Kuba Ryniewicz moved to the north of England in 2004 and has since spent nearly two decades capturing the cold landscapes and its rich characters. His work, mixing architecture in varying states of decay and queer bodies, has earned him collaborations with everyone from MCM to Fantastic Man. A selection of his work is on display at the Newcastle Contemporary Art gallery right now, under the above title. It runs until 8 October. Find out more information here.
and Grand Collection’s Food Drive and Runway Show
Returning for its fourth year — the last one having had major support from Bella Hadid and photographer Renell Medrano — skate brand Grand Collection is bringing back its annual food drive in conjunction with the launch of its Holiday 2022 collection. On 23 September at 8pm EST, a runway show will take place on the 6th Floor of 873 Broadway, New York, with all the clothes seen being available to buy online at the same time and a portion of the proceeds going to feeding New York’s homeless community. Additionally, all attendees are asked to bring with them a non-perishable food item to be donated as well.
