The majority of women could be either bisexual or gay, according to a new study. Dr Gerulf Rieger from the University of Essex’s Department of Psychology showed women videos of both attractive men and attractive women, before analyzing whether they became aroused using benchmarks such as whether their pupils dilated. Of the 345 women tested, 74% were found to have been significantly sexually aroused by both videos. “Even though the majority of women identify as straight, our research clearly demonstrates that when it comes to what turns them on, they are either bisexual or gay, but never straight,” Rieger said of the study’s results.

Meanwhile, the study also found that gay women who behave in a more stereotypically “masculine” or “butch” way are no more likely to exhibit more masculine forms of sexual arousal. “Although some lesbians were more masculine in their sexual arousal, and others were more masculine in their behaviors, there was no indication that these were the same women,” Rieger said. “This shows us that how women appear in public does not mean that we know anything about their sexual role preferences.” The moral of the story: don’t make any assumptions.
