Following the success of Asif Kapadia’s heart-rending documentary film Amy, a biopic of Amy Winehouse is now in the works. Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, best known for her roles in Prometheus and the original Swedish adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is now in talks to star as the late singer-songwriter. The biopic, which doesn’t have a title yet, is being written and directed by Kirsten Sheridan, who received an Oscar nomination for her screenplay to 2002’s In America. “Amy’s music is felt so deeply by the audience because it was deeply personal,” Sheridan said in a statement officially announcing the project. “Her vulnerability was her strength. She was called many things – a diva, a lost soul preyed upon by tabloids, a tortured genius; our aim is an innovative, emotional and life-affirming approach as we go through the looking glass into her life and art.” Sheridan’s biopic isn’t the only forthcoming film aiming to shed new light on Amy Winehouse. The singer’s father Mitch, who heavilty criticised Asif Kapadia’s documentary upon its release in July, has recently revealed he is working on his own documentary about Amy. “We are looking to do something positive. There are so many great things in Amy’s life that were missed in that film. It was a great opportunity that Asif Kapadia had and he didn’t grab it,” Mitch Winehouse said last month. “Let’s hear something new about Amy.”
