Nan Goldin at Aperture
The Aperture Foundation and its unrivaled fine art photography magazine are a cause we can definitely get behind, especially when the likes of Nan Goldin and Laurie Anderson are involved. To benefit the foundation, Goldin will be presenting a slide show celebrating the 30th anniversary of her seminal project The Ballad of Sexual Dependency, a visual diary first published in 1986 that explored intimacy between lovers and friends. Anderson will perform, as will Martha Wainwright, and as an extra-cool bonus, there will be DJ sets by famed rock photographers Bob Gruen and Mick Rock.
Monday, October 26 at 7:30PM, at Terminal 5, 610 West 56th Street.

Carrie Brownstein
One of riot grrrl’s most important grrrls – who’s also proven herself a brilliant writer and LOL-creator on Portlandia – Carrie Brownstein is officially on the list of people we’d like to be best friends with. So we definitely want to see the Sleater-Kinney guitarist talking with Questlove about her new memoir, Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. The book is sure to be filled with not only stories about Brownstein’s game-changing musical moves, but much more intimate peeks at her life and family, too.
Tuesday, October 27 at 7PM, at Saint Vitus, 1120 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn.

The Macabre Suite
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate Halloween that’s a little cooler/more sophisticated than bar-hopping and running into sexy Trump costumes, Lucien Smith has you covered. The young art world breakout is hosting The Macabre Suite in a former piano factory on the water in the Bronx. This isn’t your typical Halloween rager: the event will be filled with different installations, paintings, and performances by Travis Scott among others, combining a chance to party with a chance to discover exciting new art. To keep things appropriately eerie, the creations will center around a theme of death.
Thursday, October 29.

Thotlandia: Nightmare at Bella Noches
If you’ve discovered the dancefloor glory that is Thotlandia (congrats, you’re a cool kid), how could you miss what the hosts cook up for Halloween? And if you haven’t checked out the bi-monthly party yet, then what better time to start than Halloween? Either way, this is the happening to be at. Republic Lounge’s two levels will serve as “heaven” and “hell,” with a lineup of different DJs and a performance by CUNTMAFIA. The costume-watching promises to be quite the draw, too, which means you should start planning your own attire now.
Friday, October 30 at 10PM, at Republic Lounge, 990 Broadway.

La Petite Mort du Blingee
The closing night of At Play in the Field of the Lords at Transfer Gallery is actually the perfect time to finally catch the solo exhibit from Lorna Mills. The show is made up of animated GIFs that capture Mills’ fascination with “subcultures, absurd perpetual conditions, endless anxiety, human folly and masturbating monkeys.” To see the exhibit off, the gallery will screen La Petite Mort du Blingee, featuring the work of over 30 artists invited to participate by Mills. The result will probably be a just-right mix of highbrow and lowbrow, considering the selection of talented artists lending their vision to the cheesy graphics of Blingee.
Saturday, October 31 at 7PM, at Transfer Gallery, 1030 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn.
