London-based artist Eddie Peake is all about nudes. Not the kind that recline in the paintings of antiquity, but rather the sort that dance naked and rollerskate in sheer body suits around you as you traverse his latest show, The Forever Loop, at the Barbican’s Curve gallery.
While you take in a colourful painting that spans the entire length of the 90m curved wall, check out the installations and video work, a dancer moves through the space, reciting a monologue written by Peake in a continuous performance, alongside a rollerskater who loops through the gallery.
“I want to make a show that uses a loop structure, in terms of both time and the very specific conditions of the Curve gallery space, to convey a narrative in which unrequited desire, jealousy, love – and other real emotions implicit in the experience of being in a relationship with another person – take centre stage,” Peake explains, “I want the show, and its looped structure, to utilise the fact that the curved gallery necessarily cannot be viewed all at once, and in so doing, I’d like the act of viewing to be a narrative element, implicating the viewer as a sort of protagonist.”
Peake has previously staged a naked football match and a group dance where naked performers were painted in gold glitter. His Barbican show is not to be missed!
The Forever Loop is in The Curve gallery at the Barbican 9 October – 10 January.
