We might be in the throes of a fresh faced no makeup movement, but sometimes, the best way to show the world your inner beauty is to crank the volume up to a million! From legendary makeup master Pat McGrath's very first i-D shoot to Isamaya Ffrench's…

1) As our Managing Editor, Lynette Nylander, said of her favorite i-D cover shoot: “The skill and artistry that went into that image is so bloody brilliant. It’s i-Conic!”

2) We all scream for Cedric Buchet’s otherworldly Ice Cream Issue shoot! Treat yourself to the full spread here.

3) Sølve Sundsbø transported us to a world of pure imagination in this Just Kids Issue cover spread. This carnival of colors takes root in the Hindu celebration Holi, an annual festival of love.

4) This Alasdair McLellan shot has our spidey senses tingling! See what web i-D Beauty Editor Isamaya Ffrench spun in The Activist Issue here.

5) Back in 95, Pat McGrath teamed up with Craig McDean and Edward Enniful for her first ever i-D shoot. Over 20 years and countless legendary looks later, McGrath’s Future Issue maquillage still feels fresh and new. Check out the full spread here!

6) Before Arizona Muse rocked fishtail braided pigtails on the cover of the Lights, Camera, Action Issue in 2012, Polina Kouklina sported the intricate plaits in 04’s Expressionist Issue.

7) Artist Ally Marzella is smudged and smeared to perfection in this Lights, Camera, Action Issue story.

8) Can’t get enough of Brit babe Lily Cole’s legendary red tresses? Neither could we!

9) Luigi Merenu gave Joan Smalls a massive mane of her own for 2010’s Define Yourself Issue, which had another major hair moment on its cover: a silver haired Kristen McMenamy serving ice queen vibes.

10) Before Gemma Ward returned to the runway rocking whispy wet hair at Prada spring/summer 15, the doll-faced Aussie model was painted in primary colors for her Offspring Issue cover story.

11) How do you look hot at 100? By celebrating the skin you’re in!

12) Before Harley Weir captured Lindsey Wixson’s luscious lips in 2014’s The Beauty Issue, Mathias van Hooff sealed the the Kansas-born stunner’s perfect pucker with a heart.

13) “The i-D shoot was the first punk shoot I have ever done and the first time I have worn clothes that are so punky and gothic. I loved it!” model Ajak Deng said of her Loud Issue cover spread. Siouxsie would be so proud of her reverse mohawk shave and cat eye!

14) We can’t get enough of Sølve Sundsbø’s lime green teen dreams turning chalky splatters into Rainbow Bright beauty moments, so here’s another from the Just Kids Issue‘s colorful cover story.

15) South African Victoria’s Secret Angel Behati Prinsloo embraced her dark side for 2011’s Hedonist Issue. She’s not merely reppin’ Misfits former frontman Glenn Danzig’s band tee, but channeling the punk outfit’s iconic skull faced logo.

16) Alex Box’s intricate rose stencils are even more delicate and beautiful than the flowers themselves.

17) Back in 2012, Chen Man shot a group of Tibetan teenagers for four of our nine Whatever the Weather Issue covers, which Business of Fashion later hailed as “one of the most creative and progressive photo-stories of 2012.” It’s impossible to pick favorites, but Meng Lu’s bright blue brows definitely deserve a shout out. Take a trip back through the Chinese photographer’s crazy colorful i-D archive here.

18) Mathias van Hoof went back to black and laid it on thick for the The Hedonist Issue.

19) Paola Kudacki’s Real Issue shoot back in 95 left our heads spinning in circles. The crackling face paint is a perfect compliment to model MariaCarla’s slightly bushy brows. 20 years later, circular and chain link hair accessories were again a hit on Raf’s Dior runway.

20) Karen Smith might have had a little difficulty bedazzling her neck for the Spring Fling Dance in Mean Girls, but there’s definitely no problem with the stunning crystal looks from this 07 Alice Hawkins shot (even if it did appear in the We Got Issues Issue.)

21) Cara D’s full brows might reign supreme, but this picture perfect Role Model Issue shot makes a pretty strong case for pencil thin.

22) Lips, lashes, and a whole lotta black made Stefan Knight’s Wealth Issue beauty moments some of our boldest ever.

23) Pat McGrath took a tip from the Spice Girls and made 2 become 1 seriously strong brow on the cover of 02’s Spectator Issue.

24) “I studied Art at Chelsea and Product Design at Saint Martins, and I face-painted on the side to make a bit of cash,” i-D Beauty Editor Isamaya Ffrench told us last year. The then 23-year-old make-up maverick brought back out her party trick for 2013’s The Street Issue.

25) Blink and you’d miss Tania Dziahileva’s ice blue pupils, but Fredrik Stambro’s fluttering eyeshadow in The Flesh and Blood Issue made them unforgettable.

26) The Graduate Issue might have been grown up (Jamie Boschert sported a bare bum on its cover) but Pat McGrath and Steven Klein still kept it playful with body paint in all the right places.

27) Chloe Norgaard’s hair is a technicolor kaleidoscope of dreams. Although she’s sporting a peroxide blonde ‘do these days, we can’t think of a color that hasn’t found its way into the American model’s locks. #Tbt back to The Q&A Issue, when Angelo Pennetta captured the first four letters of ROY G. BIV.

28) King Karl’s eye patch on the cover of The Royalty Issue might have stolen the crown, but Stéphane Marais turned Sui He into a marble goddess for her turn on the cover of the 2012 issue.

29) Isamaya Ffrench got our hearts pounding with this pulsing eyebrow effect. Find out where else you didn’t know you could wear eyeliner here.

30) “The beauty of beauty is its subjective nature. It is the magical moment when the inner intentions meet the outer shell of the physical. I find strength in beauty when it’s earnest and vulnerable,” Boychild told us earlier this year. Back in 2013, the performance artist rocked a crown of cords, white lashes, powder blue lips, and icy contact lenses for the Creative Collaborations Issue.

31) For The Activist Issue, Isamaya Ffrench challenged our favorite new faces to wear their beliefs where the world can see them. Stop hiding your feelings and stand up for what you believe in!

32) We’re all thumbs up, love eyes, beating hearts for this emoji-inspired shoot. Wipe those tears away and check out how your most frequently used emojis translate into bold beauty looks here.

33) Bold lips and brows pair with cotton candy locks in this pastel pop shoot from The Time is Now Issue. Dripping goop and clay sculpture fish kept things (sur)real.

34) An effect so nice we did it twice! Isamaya Ffrench pushed crackling to the max in her full body painted looks for The Hedonist Issue in one of artist and shaman Matthew Stone’s most intricate stories.

35) Before Natalie Westling fronted our Activist and 35th Birthday Issues, the scarlet starlet hit the streets of London with Richard Bush and Sarah Richardson in deconstructed denim. The then 17-year-old’s red hot hair and watercolor make up looks proved she’s the coolest around.
