After reporting just last week that Little Simz had announced the release date for her shiny new album, A Curious Tale of Trials + Persons as September 18, we couldn’t wait for the next installment from the Space Age superstar. Lucky for us, the 21-year-old kept us keen with the stunning music video for the second track to emerge from her debut album, Dead Body, which follows an incredibly impressive collection of mixtapes and the release of last week’s Wings. In a world of money-making signings and commercial takeovers, you have to give credit to Little Simz aka Simbi Ajkawo for killing it while staying true to herself and releasing via her own label, Age 101: Music.
“Dead Body is the second song taken from the album,” Simz tells i-D. “I wrote it from a perspective of a homeless person; a perspective of someone that hasn’t got anything but is looking for everything. It just talks about fighting your battles and your own demons and being aware of that. Everyone fights battles everyday; it’s just about how we overcome that. Do we let it defeat us or do we rise above it?” She goes on to explain that although Dead Body isn’t what the rest of the record sounds like, “it ties in nicely with the rest, so it kind of works perfectly.” She adds that she believes director “Jeremy Cole got the vision perfect and got the message across well… but we shall see what the people think!”
The video starts off with a mask-wearing Little Simz staring at her reflection as she spits her haunting bars. Flicking between sinister negatives to beautiful black and white shots of the i-D fave in a rather apocalyptic setting, the video is everything we had hoped for and more.
