Sunday — a gallery and live/work space that’s actually in the living room of its owners’ Hollywood apartment — has become one of the LA art scene’s most exciting new spots, exhibiting Audrey Wollen‘s Sad Girl Theory and group shows featuring bags of Doritos. Today, Sunday opens its summer exhibition, hot in here, which boasts an amazing roster of young female artists including Avrida Bystrom, Mayan Toledano, Molly Soda, Vivian Fu, Grace Miceli and Molly Matalon.
Upon graduating from CalArts, Sunday co-founder and hot in here curator Adi Rajkovic opened the collaborative space so that she and her friends could exhibit the work of other young, emerging creative talents. “We wanted to create a space that would offer exposure to talented artists who often don’t get a chance to show elsewhere,” Adi told i-D. “In many ways, this show exemplifies that aim. I became really inspired by work that I saw on Instagram, and by the female-driven community surrounding its production and online exhibition.”
Featuring the work of 47 photographers, painters, and graphic designers, hot it here sheds light on artists who Adi feels are often excluded from or tokenized in the more established gallery scene. “Too often, exhibitions exclusively feature male artists, and when they do so, nobody asks the curator why he chose to show the work of forty-seven men,” Adi said. “With this show, we wanted to disrupt and question that — to compel our audience to see all the work as the products of talented, young artists first, and women second.”
