“I got enemies, gotta lotta enemies/ Gotta lotta people tryna drain me of my energy…” mused Drake recently in that lovely way he has of rapping slash sanging. It turns out that Drake may have haterz closer to home than he had perhaps realised. No one — least of all Meek Mill — seems to really understand the current beef that he and Drake currently find themselves embroiled in.
It all seems to have started when Meek Mill had a hissy fit on Twitter – where else – because Drake didn’t tweet the link to the Philly rapper’s new album, Dreams Worth More Than Money. “Stop comparing me to Drake too… He don’t write his own raps! That’s why he ain’t tweet my album because we found out.” Mill moaned, finishing things off with the smile emoji that has a really wide grin. “He ain’t even write that verse on my album and if I woulda knew I woulda took it off my album… I don’t trick my fans!” he exclaimed, before ending on a ‘Lol’ to presumably underscore that while he might be a bit bothered that Drizzy didn’t tweet the link to his new album, he isn’t really a bit bothered actually at all thankyouverymuch. Mill contends that Drizzy employs the use of a ghostwriter — quite literally the worst accusation one could level at a rapper — one Quentin Miller of Atlanta, who has since rigorously denied such charges.
Drake, who has ties to Meek Mill via his friend and labelmate Nicki Minaj (Mill’s girlfriend) seemed to take one big old sigh before enjoying a nice quiet DM with a friend (Hitman Holla) who subsequently screengrabbed Drake’s response, which boils down basically to this last DM: “I signed up for greatness. This comes with it.” But Drizzy wasn’t done yet. During his incredibly awesome Beats1 show at the weekend, he dropped Charged Up, which takes shots at Mill.
“No woman ever had me star struck/ Or was able to tell me to get my bars up/ I’m charged up/Rumour has it I either fucked her or I never could/ But rumour has it has never done you n****s as any good.”
And Drake wasn’t done yet. After a very lame response from Mill (a short clip of him screaming and a “Baby lotion soft… I can tell he wrote that one though” tweet), today Drake unleashed what we hope will put a nice big full stop on the whole thing.
Back To Back (Freestyle) has had over 2.5million plays to date, as Drake drops jab after jab including “Is that a world tour or your girl’s tour,” he wondered, referring to Mill’s support slot on Minaj’s Pinkprint tour. “I know you gotta be a thug for her/ This ain’t what she meant when she told you to open up more/ Yeah, trigger fingers turn to Twitter fingers/ You getting bodied by a singing n****.”
And with that, Drake sipped some tea and sat himself down (until his OVO Fest in Toronto this weekend when we can safely assume we’ll see a further response in one way or other).
It’s all gone quiet on Meek Mill’s timeline – his last post, dated yesterday simply reads ‘U ain’t even Tryna b special…” No doubt, this isn’t done yet. Expect more developments from one of hip hop’s more random beefs any day now.
