Sunflower Bean Record Release Party
We’ve sworn our true love for Sunflower Bean more than once. It’s hard not to fall for the trio of impossibly cool, young, beautiful people – led by Saint Laurent campaign star Julia Cumming – who play spot-on psychedelic post-punk. After getting a huge fan base hooked on their sound and spirit with their EP Show Me Your Seven Secrets, the band is releasing a 7″ record on Fat Possum Records and celebrating with a party and performance at Rough Trade on Thursday. That means you get to see them tear things up live, hang with them, and pick up a record to spin at home.

Veruca Salt
The news has continued to get better and better for Veruca Salt and their fans over the past couple of years. The alterna-grunge band was the coolest thing going in the 90s, and the mere mention of their name comes with a blast of nostalgia and memories of singing along to “Seether” and “Volcano Girls.” They soon became just as known for their internal drama and lineup changes, though. In 2013, the original four reunited, and just this month they released their fifth full-length LP, Ghost Notes. Now they’re backing the release up with can’t-miss live performances.

Something Must Break
Something Must Break has generated a lot of buzz and gained a lot of respect for how well it portrays the life of a transgender woman living in Stockholm. Based on a novel by Eli Leven, the film navigates society’s response to transgender people and how that plays into the protagonist’s own mindset. The movie hasn’t been distributed in the United States, so Opening Ceremony and SCRUFF’s presentation of it at Pioneer Works is a rare opportunity to see it for yourself.

The Small Press Flea
Finding your favorite underground magazines or discovering new indie publishers usually requires trawling hole-in-the-wall shops and the internet. But Saturday, these publishers are coming together to give lit junkies a day of one-stop shopping. Publishing houses and magazines like A Public Space, BOMB Magazine, Futurepoem and Ugly Duckling Presse will sell their most sought-after and exciting new titles, and will probably be happy to answer all of your questions about what to look for next and where you can get it.

Stop Making Sense
Jonathan Demme’s Stop Making Sense has reigned as one of the most beloved, critically acclaimed rock docs since its 1984 release. Demme filmed the Talking Heads over a three-night stint at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood, but the movie is more than a concert. Stylized twists are quintessential Talking Heads: David Byrne is joined by more band members with each song and his suit grows larger as the performance goes on. Rooftop Films will present the movie outdoors with live music first.
