Kristen Stewart has spoken out about the “girl prison” of misogyny and the unreasonable demands made of women. Speaking about the straightjacket of these expectations, she says, “I believe the operative words are, accessible, easy, and uncomplicated,” while rolling her eyes.
In a candid interview with Marie Claire, Stewart reveals that after years of being chastised for looking sullen on the red carpet, not playing the part of the sparkling lady-guest in TV interviews and having a complex personal life, she has embraced her rebel spirit: “Fuck it all!,” she says. “It was a really traumatic period in my early 20s that kick-started something in me that was a bit more…feral,” Kristen explains, smiling and saying, “I lit my universe on fire and I watched it burn.”
Stewart describes hiding behind her hair as a crutch, and says that since cutting it short, “I had to let my face hang out. I felt more confident than I had in a really long time. And it felt really good. Maybe to most people long hair is prettier. But then what? Is your main goal in life to be desired? That is boring as fuck.” Kristen says she is done apologizing for being who she is and that she is getting smarter and calmer as she gets older, with the help of some sound advice from the godmother of punk: “Patti Smith told me to always take care of my teeth and lungs,” she says.
