“Female superheroes are normally naked or in bikinis. No-one would be able to fight like that,” Cara Delevingne has said in an interview with Empire magazine. “Wonder Woman – how the hell does she fight? She would be dead in a minute,” the actor concluded.
Delevingne is part of Marvel’s ensemble cast for the 2016 superhero film Suicide Squad, but she is eager to explain that that film is different. “There are only three girls in [Suicide Squad],” Cara concedes, “but in my opinion they have the best roles,” she claims, adding that, “Generally though, superhero movies are totally sexist”.
Delevingne echoes the sentiments of a growing number of women in hollywood calling out sexism in the film industry as a whole. However, her focus on superhero films in particular is reminiscent of Scarlett Johansson’s calls for the most famous female Marvel superhero, Black Widow, to get her own spin-off film. Despite being one of the main characters in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Johansson’s character is the only one without her own franchise; and she was not even selected for the Avengers action figure set, despite the fact it features her motorbike – being ridden by Captain America.
