For each of their three collaborative collections so far, Louis W. for A.P.C. has brought us an intriguing short film in which to display the collection. They may only be 2-5 minutes long but their gritty and mysterious storylines draw you into the lives of their characters. Previously there was BENT4U and Odyssey, but it’s their latest endeavor, Audition, featuring the autumn/winter 14 collection that’s caught the film critics’ collective eye.

Directed by Grant Curatola and Louis Levy, the short is inspired by François Truffaut’s The 400 Blows, and tells the story of a prospectless and bruised boy, played by newcomer Bruno di Corcia, just out of school and auditioning for a film he has no interest in. It’s raw and authentic and somehow sinister in the way you never see the auditioner.

From Matthew Frost’s small films starring big actresses, Tatia Pileva’s First Kiss – the one with French songstress Soko in it – and Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola’s Prada Candy with Leá Seydoux, the annual Berlin Film Festival has thrown out some gems. This year Audition won big, walking away with awards for Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
