The graduate season is upon us, and the University of Westminster kicked it all off this week with a stellar presentation showing off the hard graft of 17 BA Fashion students over the last year. Churning out the likes of Fashion Easties Ashley Williams, Louise Alsop and Mary Benson and with an alumni list including Christopher Bailey, Katie Hillier and Stuart Vevers, Westminster’s always got a line-up of future stars. Here are our ones to watch…
Lucy James (menswear)
Menswear designer Lucy James displayed a brutal mix of textures on masked boys, with oversized, over-frayed garms, layered up like armour.
Roberta Einer (womenswear)
My Little Pony pastel pinks and blues were contrasted with bulky jackets and frilly skirts as Roberta Einer’s blonde bomshells stalked the runway to the sounds of The Chainsmokers’ Selfie in embroidered illustrations of girls’ faces.
Samuel Best (menswear)
Suits were deconstructed and put back together in sections made up from pin stripes, brocade and severely shredded embroidery. Trousers all came baggy, and loose draping was a running theme in Samuel Best’s collection.
Kate Britain (womenswear)
There’s always one knitwear extraordinaire each year and this time it was Kate Britain. Soft, mustard yellow and sunset red, leather panels were woven together with chunky knitted hems. SIBLING, you better watch out…
Danielle Nevin (womenswear)
Cracked, painted surfaces, reminiscent of the Margiela x Converse collaboration, were layered in panels that dropped as if they had wire in the hems, while white jackets were printed with Japanese-style blue and red gardens.
Robert Newman (menswear)
Poncho style overcoats and thick puffa jackets came in sun bleached, earthy colours, with huge pockets and black prints of wheat sheafs. Robert Newman’s man is ready for the wrath of the elements.
Milena Konakchieva (womenswear)
Dressed up like giant, embroidered handbags that your grandma used to carry around somehow turned out brilliantly for Milena Konakchieva. Thick, papery material with a floral outside print was reinforced with wood-style edges and giant, pleated skirts.
